Personal Change

The 5 F’s of Personal Change

Dealing with change can be challenging, so it is important to get your head in to the zone and manage change rather than being a victim of it.

We often use the 5 F’s as a way of thinking about or framing change.

The 5 F's

First it is worth thinking about the Causes of the Change – these are usually either:

  • a Force – something external to you or
  • a Frustration – something internal to you.

Then we need to deal with

  • your Feelings – how do you feel about the cause and about the change. It is best to address your feelings as they can often be a blockage to moving forward and making progress.
  • your Finances – unfortunately most changes come with a financial cost aside the emotional one above. Take time and sort out your money, make a budget and get some advice if you need it.
  • now you are ready to deal with your plausible Future(s) – what would you like to do now, what would you like to be, what do you enjoy as a hobby or interest? Whatever it is try and balance the dreams and ambitions with some  realism.

We will talk about these elements in class.

In dealing with problems it can be worth remembering the acronym:

D.W.I.A.M.O.

  • Deal
  • With
  • It
  • And
  • Move
  • On …
